MTV News and CMT News are Available on the Archive

While MTV News took all its sites offline in June, its contents are now available in the Wayback Machine, with more than 470,000 pages dating back to 1977 (here's a sample search for Peter Gabriel). Similarly, CMT News is also available—with 70,000 pages saved dating back to 2002 (sample search for Dolly Parton). These archives are valuable as they serve as living records of entertainment history and highlight the importance of web archiving in maintaining our digital culture.

For more information on accessing the collections, please read our blog post from the Director of the Wayback Machine, Mark Graham, below.

The Story of Archiving "The Famous Computer Cafe"

A previously lost collection of interviews and episodes from The Famous Computer Cafe, a 1980s radio show focused on home computers, was recovered, digitized and is now publicly available on the Internet Archive. The show, which aired from 1983 to 1986, featured computer industry news, product reviews, and interviews with prominent figures of the time, including Timothy Leary, Douglas Adams, Bill Gates, and others. The tapes were discovered by archivist Kay Savetz during a property sale and were digitized through a GoFundMe campaign. Although many more tapes remain lost, the recovery of these interviews offers hope that other historical treasures may still be found.

Read the full account of the recovery and restoration of this long-dormant radio show from Kay Savetz, below.

Cartoon Network Is Latest in Online Media Erasures

View this email in your browser

Dear Patron,

Last week, the Cartoon Network website was taken down from the internet, joining other now-defunct outlets like Comedy Central, MTV News, CMT, Gawker, and more—sites currently devoid of reporting or articles.

We believe access to information is a fundamental right. The Wayback Machine is preserving essential media for curious citizens everywhere. And as cultural content continues to disappear, it's crucial we fight to preserve access to the historical record.
