Using Archive Collections to Preserve Mid-Century Modern Architecture

George Smart, founder and CEO of USModernist, is dedicated to preserving mid-century modern houses with the aim to preserve them and showcase their artistic value. He uses the Internet Archive to maintain an open digital collection of modernist homes and architectural magazine called USModernist Archives. The Archives chronicle the work of 150 architects, detailing 21,000 houses, and features a vast library of architectural publications. Smart also promotes his mission through his podcast, USModernist Radio. The Internet Archive's resources are invaluable to Smart's work, leading him to support the organization as a donor. Celebrating the Archive's Virtual Concert Series

During the early days of the pandemic, the Internet Archive had to shift to remote work in March 2020, which brought the challenge of keeping everyone engaged during our all-staff virtual meetings. In April 2020, we came up with a creative solution: biweekly musical performances before our Monday and Friday meetings. Called "Essential Music Concerts from Home," this initiative was like offering treats to entice people to attend a staff gathering. As we celebrate the program's (just over) four-year anniversary, we've written a blog highlighting some incredible musical guests from over 50 artists who have performed on our virtual stage. You can read about them in our blog, linked below.

Out of its Shell
It's always a delight perusing through the Biodiversity Heritage Library for a plethora of texts on the amazing flora, fauna and historic artifacts of that past that make up our ecosystems! This time, we recommend Mollusca: The Southern Synthesis, which covers the unique and beautifully photogenic marine, freshwater and terrestrial mollusks of Australia.
Press Play on Pepsiman
Pepsiman was the mascot for Pepsi in Japan during the 1990s. The character was featured in advertisements, music albums, and even its own video game, all of which are preserved in the Archive. Highlighted above is a mini-CD from the video game called JAMES & GANG—PEPSIMAN (1998), released to promote the ad campaign in Japan at the time.
